Can I use Web Log Analyzer by Search Term to see all visitors or only those from search engines?
Yes.
Use Options from the Edit menu and check the box "include visitors not referred by a search engine"
Totals for all non-SE referrals will be shown as a single line in the search term lists.
How do I use Web Log Analyzer by Search Term to determine which search terms are important for me?
See the info on grouping similar keywords to show results for keyword groups here.
Will Web Log Analyzer by Search Term help me see if changes to my pages are effective?
A specific keyword or keyword group will define much more exactly a specific group of visitors whose behaviour you might want to examine. By defining target pages or files, you will be able to plot achievement of targets over time for each keyword group. See the info on target pages here.
Can I use the log files for my own site to determine which keywords are important for Search Engine optimization?
See this article and discussion in response to a usenet thread .
My web host deletes my log files at arbitrary times during the month. Is this necessary?
No. It isn't.
One host I had a discussion with that does this is 24hostingnow. A (messy, inconvenient) solution to the problem is in the next answer.
The long term solution is to get a better host. vonetwork.com is one host that does not cause you this problem and also provide full logs for all add-on and subdomains.
My web host deletes my log files at arbitrary times during the month. What can I do about it?
A temporary solution is to create a cron job which takes a copy of your log every few hours and keeps the copy on your own server.
See a description of how to create the cron job here.
Where can I find other log analysis tools?
softsamba.co.uk is one resource we like. It has smaller better defined categories and very little advertising.

The help for version 1 was a differrent format and is still available by clicking on the link.
