Show Very Big Files, Find and Copy Text
I. Show very big files regardless of contents
Kyboma can show files of any size quickly and without causing problems. Files of 200 Mbytes will be displayed as quickly as files of 200 bytes.
Ctrl+End will position to the end of the file quickly and Ctrl+Home back to the start.
You can use the scroll bar to reposition to any part of the file and Page Up/Page Down will move up and down the file reading text from the disk when it is needed.
All this will happen automatically without any action being taken by the user. The result will appear the same as when a file is read in any other application, Notepad for example.
However please be warned, whilst Kyboma can be used without problems to read files of several hundred Mbytes, opening such a file with another application will often crash windows. If you want to try this please save all your work in all applications first.
Kyboma will show text contents of any file.
If the file is not a plain text or html/rtf file it will often contain non-printable characters. These will usually be shown as | or a square depending on the font used to display text.
See also Options:Show Text - B. Remove Blank Lines / Warnings
II. Finding and Copying text
Use Find and Clip from the edit menu.
Use Find from Edit menu to find a string within the file displayed.
If found, the string will be shown selected. The F3 key will find the next string in the text.
At the end of the file you can loop back to the start of the file and re-start the search automatically.
Text will be found even if the file shown is very large. In this case Kyboma will read the file from disk and you can press the Esc key to stop the search.
See Edit/Find
Use Clip from the Edit menu to Copy selected text.
You can then use Paste in the menus of many applications to insert the copied text.
ALTERNATIVE Shift+Insert will usually work wherever you are typing text.
Text can be selected by holding the shift key down whilst you move the cursor (using up/down/left/right/PgUp/PgDn/Ctrl+End/Ctrl+Home).
Text can also be selected using the mouse by holding the left mouse button down and dragging the mouse on the text. If you drag the mouse beyond the start or end of the text currently displayed, text will be scrolled as well as added to the selection.
All text selected will be copied to the clipboard. If the file is very large, it is possible you selected many megabytes of data. In this case the file will be read to copy the text and progress will be shown on the status bar if option "Show Progress .." is checked on the Windows/Status Bar menu. You can press Esc to stop reading a large file.
WARNING. If you read more than 2 or 3 Mbytes, many applications will malfunction (or Windows will crash) when you try to paste the text. Kyboma can be used without problems to read files of several hundred Mbytes however opening such a file with Wordpad for example will crash windows.
NB Find and Clip always apply to the window with the focus (title bar is blue/highlighted). This can be either the pop up text window or a file list window. To change the window, select a window on the Windows menu.
If a file list window has the focus, Find and Clip apply to the Current Section. To Find or Clip text first change section to Text.
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.

List one or many directories include all Subdirectories if required.
Kyboma gives a great amount of flexibility when selecting the files to be listed.
For example, It is possible:
- to combine several directories even from different drives,
- specify to list all subdirectories or not (separately for each directory),
- specify a different file type (list) for each directory,
- even to add an individual named file.
For more info on features relating to specification of directories/files to list see:

Format the List easily and always remember the settings.
Formatting the list of files and changing the screen layout in Kyboma is very easy.
You can of course use the mouse OR the menu options OR the Right-Click menu options as in other applications.
In addition, Kyboma offers many keyboard shortcuts.
For Example Keyboard Shortcuts:
- to change column width and even alignment [Usually Ctrl+O, etc]. See Col Width
- to change Row Height [Usually Ctrl+W, etc]. See Row Height
- to increase/decrease the number of fixed row and columns. See Split - Set Col
- to toggle between saved values for proportion of the screen used for each section. See Toggle Position
- to tile the windows or fill the screen with a single window. See Fill Screen
- to change the font/increase-decrease size. See Font
Kyboma will always remember the last used format for each window and will show the same format and the same window size and position for each window when restarted.
When a column is removed and then later added it's previous width will also be remembered.
And Other useful features available (only) in Kyboma include:
- Copy the height of the current row to all other rows. See Copy Row Height to all Rows
- Options to add groups of columns as a single menu item. See Add/Remove Column - Single Col or Set
- Columns can be moved left or right easily using Alt+LeftArrow or Alt+RightArrow. The first column selected in GREEN will always be moved.
- The format to display date, time and size can be entered as any value supported. See Date, Time, Size format
- Files can be sorted using a sort order with as many columns as required.
The sortorder can even be defined with the shortcut key for sort. See Sort Ascending - Sort.

I. Show Next or Previous file
Any Show command will always show the file selected in green.
If more than one line is selected using the cursor, the file displayed will be from the line where the selection was started.
If you press Shift+Up to select many lines, this is the last line shown in green.
If you use Shift+Down to select lines, this is the first line.
A faint outline is shown around the cell where the selection was started if that cell is still visible.
Alt+Up and Alt+Down can be used to show the next or previous file in the file list.
These keys will work when the Current Section is directory tree, file list or text.
The file displayed with Alt+Up or Alt+Down key is the file from the next or previous line from the file list. When you use Alt+Up or Alt+Down, hidden lines and directories will be skipped and Kyboma will display the previous/next file that is shown on the list.
If Alt+Up/Dn are used any previous green selection in the file list will be lost and the line for the file displayed will be shown selected in green. The list will also be repositioned so that file is visible.
If Alt+Up/Dn are used when the file list has no text section, the next file from the list will be displayed on a pop up window.
Alt+Up/Dn will also work on the pop up text window. The next file shown will always be the next file on the SAME file list window even if a different file list window is now the Current File List.
The Current File List window is the window to which menu commands will apply. You can see which file list is the current file list by looking at the title in the blue title bar or in the list of Windows. The title for the current file list will always start **.
Options (can be changed in Options:Show Text)
C. Alt+Up/Dn
When a file is displayed using the Show command, a message will be added to the List of Results on the status bar. A message will be added every time Alt+Up/Dn are used if the option "Add message to status when ..." is checked.
When the end or start of the list is reached, a message will be displayed with an option to loop back to the start or end respectively. This message will not be shown when option "No prompt when reach start/end ... " is set.
I.e. If this option is set, when you press Alt+Dn and the last file on the list is already selected/displayed, Kyboma will loop back to the start of the list and display the first file.

II. Change Font/Size
Standard keys are used to Increase (I) / Decrease(D) the size of the font used for the current section and to select a different Font (F).
Each File List window remembers a different font/size setting for each section (directory tree, file list or text).
Font and size settings like most settings for Kyboma are always remembered and the same settings will be used if you Exit Kyboma and restart.
When text is displayed on a pop-up window, the font/size settings will be the same as those for the text section of the file list window.
If the font/size settings are changed on the pop up window the changes will also be made on the text section of the file list window (if a text section is now shown or when it is later shown).
NB The font/size for the directory tree will not always be changed when options to change font/size for all sections are used. Only certain font/size combinations are supported due to inconsistencies in windows. To see a list of supported fonts press F when the current section is the directory tree.
Use "Font ...", "Increase ...", "Decrease ..." on the Select menu to Change Font/Size for all sections on a file list window.
Keys Ctrl+standard Font/Size key can also be used (Ctrl+F/I/D).
To view all sections with the same Font, Use Ctrl+F.
The Font displayed will be from the file list section for the window. When you press OK on the Font selection screen, all sections of that file list window will be changed to have the same font.
If a (show text/show cell) pop up window was shown using text from the current file list window, the font/size on that pop up window will also be changed when Ctrl+F/I/D is used.

III. Toggle text section
The toggle key will change the amount of the screen used for that section to one of two fixed values. Press the toggle key a second time to change it to the other value.
The key to toggle Text is T.
The key to toggle the Directory Tree is R.
The position is saved as a proportion (%) of the width or height available. The actual size used for the section when toggle keys are used therefore depends on the window size.
Toggle positions can be saved using "Text - Save ...", "Tree - Save ...", etc. on the Toggle position section of the Windows menu.
Toggle positions can also be saved by using the right-click menu from the separation bar.
When the text is shown on a pop up screen and you press the text toggle key (T) on the file list window, Kyboma will display the show text window. If the show text window contains text from a different file list window then a warning will be displayed first.
Toggle keys can also be used directly to change the amount of space used for a section.
Ctrl+Toggle Key will increase the amount of space used for that section.
Ctrl+Alt+Toggle Key will decrease the amount of space used for that section.
The increase/decrease is always 20%.
E.g. Ctrl+T will increase the part of the screen used to display text by 20%
Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Toggle Key will show or hide that section.
The Toggle Position part of the Windows menu can be used to increase/decrease the part used by the text section by smaller amounts using keys.
See Text - Move with Up/down keys
Show Text - Action file shown
Show Text - Action file shown
Actions from both menus Action and File (File management functions) are usually done on the selected file.
When the Current Section is the text section and the current window is that file list window, the file shown in the text section is "the selected file".
When the pop up window for Show Text is the current window (i.e. it has the focus), the file shown is "the selected file".

Show Text when start / Auto refresh text
Show Text when start / Auto refresh text
Text can be shown automatically using these features.
NB Both functions can be switched on/off using Options:Show Text
A. Show Text when start
If this option is checked, the text that was last displayed in the text section of each Kyboma file list window will be shown when Kyboma is started.
Text that was displayed in a pop up window will never be re-displayed when Kyboma is started.
D. Auto refresh text
When the option "AutoRefresh Text ..." is checked, the selected file will always be displayed in the text section of the file list window. When a new file is selected using up/down keys, the text section of the file list window will automatically be refreshed.
No change will be made to the text displayed if a directory is selected.
The green selection is always used to determine the file to display. The blue selection is ignored.
If there is no text section on the file list window, this option is ignored. Text displayed on a pop up window will never be autorefreshed.
The List of Results in the status bar will show that a new file is displayed when the file is autorefreshed if option "Add message to status when AutoRefresh ... " is checked.
The "AutoRefresh Text ..." option can be different for each file list window. It is also included on the Quick Options menu.
The "Add Message ..." Option applies to all file list windows.
Show Text Using a Pop Up Window
Show Text Using a Pop Up Window
Text will be displayed on the text section of the file list window if a text section is shown.
If no text section is shown it will be displayed on a pop up window.
Use Text on the View menu to show/hide the text section or press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+T.
The title of the pop up window will contain the HTML title/Contents meta tag/First part of body if the file is HTML with one of these elements present. Otherwise title will be set to Show Raw Text from + path and filename.
When you press the Esc key you will always be returned to the Kyboma file list window from which the text on the pop-up screen was displayed.
All Other menus and keys (if available) will apply to the current file list window. This may be different to the file list window from which the text on the pop-up screen was displayed.
E.g. After you
a. display a file/cell from FileListA
b. select FileListB from the Windows menu
c. select the Show File/Cell window from the Windows menu.
Then any menu or key will apply to the FileListB even though the current window is data from FileListA.
I.e. If you now press 4 to select a filetype and then F5 to refresh the file list.
Then FileListB will be refreshed with the new filetype.
Note that there is only ever one pop up window for Show Cell and one pop up window for Show Text.
Each of these pop up windows can contain data from any file list window.
If you issue a command to show text or cell data, the previous contents of the pop up window will be replaced.
Press Esc to return to the Kyboma file list window from which the text on the pop-up screen was displayed.
The pop up window will be positioned so that all of it can be seen and so that it does not hide/cover the cell being displayed (if possible). Kyboma will try to position the pop up window a. below then b. to the right then c. to the left then d. above the cell. If none of these fit, the pop up window will be placed in the bottom left hand corner of the Kyboma main window.
If option "Popup Text - Resize ..." is checked on Options/Show Text Popup, then the pop up window will be re-sized every time a new show command is issued.
This option also available from the Edit/Quick Options menu.
If the file list window is maximised and a show command is selected that requires a pop up window then:
If Option "Popup even when maximised ..." is checked on Options/Popups - Show Text ..., the maximised file list window will be changed to fill the screen before the pop up is displayed.
If the option is not checked, the text will be displayed in a maximised window. Esc key can still be used to return to the window where the show command was issued.
The default size for the pop up window can be defined by using "Set Std Size ..." from Options/Popups - Show Text ....
Move Files Up And Down The List
Move Files Up And Down The List
Keys are available to move files selected in GREEN up or down the list.
[Usually Ctrl+Shift+U and Ctrl+Shift+W]
All files selected in green will be moved one position higher in the list each time the Up key is pressed. Or one position lower each time the down key is pressed.
When possible the file(s) moved will however remain at the same position on the screen. I.e. when the file is moved one position up the list, the part of the list will also be moved one position down so that the selected file remains visible and all other files shown appear to move.
When the top or bottom of the list is reached, pressing the Up/Down key again will have no effect.
NB moving the position of files within the list could be useful for browsing specific files in sequence or passing files to another application in a specific sequence. However the sequence of files is not saved and will be lost when the file list is refreshed.
Hide Rows
Rows can be temporarily hidden from view in order to simplify the list / reduce the list as items are processed.
Hidden rows will usually be ignored. E.g. when moving up and down the list with UpArrow and DownArrow keys.
For more info see Unhide all hidden rows
Rows selected in green can be hidden using the Right-Click (context) menu for the FileList section.
All hidden rows can be shown using the option available on both the Right-Click menu and from the Select menu.
Hide Columns
Columns can be temporarily hidden from view in order to simplify the list. Data for hidden columns will still be available until the file list is refreshed but can only be seen when Unhide is selected from the menu.
The hidden column will remain selected but will only be retained after the next refresh if Unhide columns is done before refresh.
Unhide columns will always show all hidden columns. This includes:
- any columns that have been hidden using Hide columns,
- any columns that were unselected or removed,
- columns that are always read (seq no, file name, path, type and size)
Unhide columns will not change the columns selected to be displayed at the next refresh except for any columns that have been hidden using Hide columns. These will be only be read again if not hidden.
Hide Columns is therefore different to Remove Columns in that only an unhide is needed to show the column again. If a column is removed it must be added using Select Columns or Add/Remove Column.
Columns selected in green can be hidden and unhidden using the Right-Click (context) menu for the FileList section.
