Move
[Or Copy]
To move or copy files or directories:
1. Select the files/directories to be copied.
2. Choose Move or Copy from the file menu.
3. Enter the destination directory name or file name (mask).
4. Press OK to Check space.
5. Files will now be copied. You will be asked about files to be replaced.
6. Kyboma will pause every n items if option set.
7. Check what has been done on status bar and file list.
1. Select the files/directories to be copied.
All Items Selected in the Current Section will be copied (or moved).
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
Items Selected depends on Current Section.
. When the current section is directory tree - the directory selected is actioned.
. When the current section is file list - the files and/or directories selected in blue and marked with * will be actioned.. If no files are selected in blue, the files selected in green will be actioned.
. When the current section is the text section - the file currently displayed will be actioned.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD:
Selected Files can also be dragged onto a directory using the mouse to start Move/Copy.
Drop files on any directory in the file/directory tree of the same or another window.
Or drop on the file list section of a single directory list to copy/move to that directory.
2. Choose Move or Copy from the file menu.
On the confirm Move/Copy screen you can switch between Move and Copy.
For drag-drop, Move/Copy will be set according to option selected on Options: Copy/Move Misc [Action when drag/drop].
3. Enter the destination directory name or file name (mask).
When only a single file is selected, just enter the name of the new file.
Subdirectory names can also be added in format subdir1\subdir2\filename.type
Any subdirectories that do not yet exist will be created.
To copy to a subdirectory of the (first) directory listed just enter the subdirectory name [followed by a \ when only one file is selected].
Note that a directory will be copied to a new directory with the same subdirectory name as the old directory.
E.g. 1. Copy C:\Notes.TXT to abc will copy file Notes.TXT to file C:\abc
E.g. 2. Copy C:\temp\ to abc will create directory C:\abc\temp\ and copy all files in C:\temp to directory C:\abc\temp\
E.g. 3. Copy C:\temp\, C:\Notes.TXT to C:\abc\ will create directory C:\abc\temp\ and copy all files in C:\temp to directory C:\abc\temp\ File Notes.TXT will be copied to directory C:\abc\
To add a prefix and or suffix to the file name and/or type of each file enter the new file name type with *-notation.
E.g. Copy File1.txt, File2, File3.doc to "cpy * 10-12.X*" will create files "cpy file1 10-12.Xtxt", "cpy file2 10-12.X", "cpy file3 10-12.Xdoc"
NB Changing the file type will mean that files will not automatically be associated with application(s) used for starting them. For example Select action from associations will no longer present word, wordpad, etc for a document that has been renamed from a.doc to a.xdoc
Directory / file (mask) entered are remembered for each subsequent use of Move/Copy from file menu. Separate values are remembered for each of Move/Copy. They will not be overwritten when you use drag/drop.
TIP: This provides a useful way to collect a group of files into a single directory.
a. select the directory to which files are to be copied in the directory tree and press C to copy the path and file name to the clipboard.
b. Select the first file to be copied and press Alt, then F, then C
c. Press Shift+Insert to copy the clipboard (Directory name) as destination path ("To").
d. Then press enter to copy this file.
e. Now you can select each other file to be copied, press alt FC and then enter.
4. Press OK to Check space.
If there is insufficient space or you will use more than the % of space [Options: Copy/Move Misc] for which a warning is requested, you will be warned about a possible space problem before the copy/move is started.
Space needed can be displayed always on the confirm copy/move screen by pressing Space. Whether space is shown or not is remembered for subsequent uses of Move/Copy.
Free Space on all drives can be listed using the Free Space button.
5. Files will now be copied. You will be asked about files to be replaced.
If a file to be created already exists you will be asked what should be done [unless one of options to process automatically / always has been set].
For quick/easy comparison the screen will display a message if the files have the same size and/or timestamp.
Possibilities include
- replace file [Yes]
- skip that file but continue with other files/directories selected [No]
- stop copy/move [Cancel]
- rename either old or new file.
If you select rename, a new name for either old or new file will be created automatically.
TIP:
1. Use "Rename (Old .." when replacing any existing file with a new version to keep a backup of the old version in the same directory.
2. Use "Rename (New) All" when copying a directory and you want to be sure you copy all files as well as keeping all the existing files. This may cause there to be two files with identical contents but you will be sure no files are overwritten by mistake.
3. Use "Skip this screen .. when .. same Date/Size" to put a group of files in the same directory without copying files that have the same timestamp, size AND name as a file already in the directory. NB It is possible to create two files with the same timestamp, exactly the same size and the same name which are different. No check is done on the contents of the file with this option.
You can choose to take the same action for all files (i.e. Yes To All/No To All/Rename To All) or take the same action always without a prompt.
NB Selecting option "Always" means that files will be replaced [YES] or ignored [NO] or renamed whenever Copy/Move are used in the future without any further message. To avoid undesired loss of data with this option a warning that the option is set will be show when it is first used in a session and then once every 10, 20 or 60 minutes after that when move/copy is requested. You can enter any number of minutes as the frequency of the
If any option "Always" is selected it can be turned off using Options: Copy/Move Replace & Recycle
6. Kyboma will pause every n items if option set.
If the option is checked on Options: Misc, Kyboma will pause after processing the number of files entered in options and ask whether to continue with other selected files.
This option is available to make it easy to stop an action which is causing a problem on each file when a large number of files are selected.
If Yes is pressed, a further group of n files are processed and this continue-confirmation screen is displayed again.
If No is pressed, all files are processed without further confirmations being required.
Cancel will stop the current action.
NB:
Kyboma will only pause for Move/Copy/Delete if BOTH the general option to pause AND the option to pause for Move/Copy/Delete are checked.
7. Check what has been done on status bar and file list.
Progress will be shown if Show Progress Indicator in Status Bar (Windows menu) is checked.
Percentage done shown here is % of total bytes copied/moved.
Total number of files moved/copied will be shown in List of results if Show List of results in Status Bar (Windows menu) is checked.
Press stop button on status bar (if shown) or Esc key to Interrupt the move/copy.
In the list of results the total number of files/directories copied/moved will be shown. Select the line in the list and press enter to see a list of files/directories that were selected for copy and for which the copy was started.
In this list individual files selected for copy will be shown. The list does NOT include all files in any directories selected.
A directory which was only partly deleted before you pressed Stop will be included on the list with **INCOMPLETE** shown after the directory name. The number of subdirectories of that final directory which are incomplete will also in the message.
Files/directories shown on file list will be updated on each window when move/copy is complete unless option to Update File List (File Menu) for that window is unchecked.
Options are also available to automatically refresh file list after move/copy/delete. See Options: Copy/Move Misc.

Delete
To delete files or directories:
1. Select the files/directories to be deleted.
2. Choose Delete or Delete without recycle from the file menu.
3. Kyboma will pause every n items if option set.
4. Check what has been done on status bar and file list.
1. Select the files/directories to be deleted.
All Items Selected in the Current Section will be deleted
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
Items Selected depends on Current Section.
. When the current section is directory tree - the directory selected is actioned.
. When the current section is file list - the files and/or directories selected in blue and marked with * will be actioned.. If no files are selected in blue, the files selected in green will be actioned.
. When the current section is the text section - the file currently displayed will be actioned.
2. Choose Delete or Delete without recycle from the file menu.
On the confirm Delete screen you can also select whether files will be retained in the recycle directory or not.
Recycle directory has been set to Recycled on the same drive as original location of file.
Files which have been copied to recycle dir will be logged in in BkupLog.csv which is in the same directory as the exe. The log contains the recycle file created and the source file.
Files that are deleted from the Kyboma recycle dir will be completely removed and cannot be recovered. Note that Windows puts file in subdirectories of recycled when deleted with Explorer. If you then delete the files from the subdirectory of recycled with Kyboma a backup can still be saved in the recycled dir.
When you try to Move/Copy files you will be warned if there is insufficient space and an option will be available to delete files in recycle directory.
Standard windows recycle processing is not done and windows disk cleanup will not show Kyboma recycle files.
By creating such plain text logs rather than using the registry and windows features, problems created by windows bugs are reduced.
4. Check what has been done on status bar and file list.
Total number of files deleted will be shown in the List of results if Show List of results in Status Bar (Windows menu) is checked.
Press stop button on status bar (if shown) or Esc key or any other key defined as stop (check help for keys with F1) to Interrupt the deletions.
In the list of results the total number of files/directories deleted will be shown. Select the line in the list and press enter to see a list of files/directories that were selected for delete and for which the delete was started.
In this list individual files selected for deletion will be shown. The list does NOT include files contained in directories.
A directory which was only partly deleted before you pressed Stop will be included on the list with **INCOMPLETE** shown after the directory name.
Files/directories shown on file list will be updated on each window when delete is complete unless option to Update File List (File Menu) for that window is unchecked.
Options are also available to automatically refresh file list after move/copy/delete. See Options: Copy/Move Misc.

Rename
To rename files or directories:
1. Select the file or directory to be renamed.
2. Choose Rename from the File menu and Enter the new name.
3. Old and new name will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
NB
Rename is useful to edit the filename/type on a simple screen.
It is also the only way to change a directory name.
To perform more general rename of files/directories with *-notation, replace options and move of entire directories with creation of a subdir for the dir moved, use Move function.
1. Select the file or directory to be renamed.
Only a single file or directory will be renamed with this function. Use Move to rename multiple files / directories.
Item renamed will be from the Current Section:
. directory tree - the directory selected will be renamed.
. file list - the first file or directory selected in blue and marked with * will be renamed. If no files are selected in blue, the first file selected in green will be renamed
. the text section - the file currently displayed will be renamed.
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
2. Choose Rename from the File menu and Enter the new name.
Enter the name of the new file.
A mask in *-notation is not allowed. Use Move to enter a new name using *-notation
Rename can be used to move a file/directory to a different/new subdirectory of the directory where it is now.
Use Move to move a file to a different drive.
Files cannot be replaced using rename. Use Move for full replace options.
3. Old and new name will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
.
Properties
To change properties of a file or directory:
1. Select the file or directory.
2. Choose Properties from the File menu and Enter the new properties.
3. New properties will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
1. Select the file or directory.
Only a single file or directory can be changed with this function.
Item renamed will be from the Current Section:
. directory tree - the directory selected.
. file list - the first file or directory selected in blue and marked with *. If no files are selected in blue, the first file selected in green.
. the text section - the file currently displayed.
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
2. Choose Properties from the File menu and Enter the new properties.
The current values for Read-Only, Hidden, System and Archive are displayed and can be changed here.
Read-Only files are normal files which you want to be able to display but do not want to change.
Many programs will give an error if you try to delete or change a Read-Only, Hidden or System file. Some programs (including Kyboma) will allow changes but require confirmation or give a warning.
The Archive attribute or property is set sometimes when a file is changed. We recommend that you ignore this property as we believe it to be unreliable.
Hidden and System properties should only be changed by advanced users.
Hidden and system files are not shown in many programs when files are listed (unless a specific option to show them is selected).
Hidden and system files will be listed by Kyboma when "Show Hidden .. /Show System .." resp. are checked. See Select By File Type screen.
Move and delete functions in Kyboma will ask for confirmation of action on read-only, hidden and system files unless confirmation is turned off using Options: Copy/Move confirm
In Kyboma when files are Moved or Copied, all properties of the destination file will be set to the same values as for the source file.
3. New properties will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
Kyboma will show properties using the first letter of each property.
r - Read-Only
h - Hidden
s - System
a - Archive
The letters listed as the new attributes are those properties which are set (checked).
The same letters are used to display attributes in the file list when File Attributes column is selected.
Update FileList
This menu item is checked if changes are shown on the file list as soon as files are Moved/Copied/Deleted in any Kyboma FileList window.
If files are selected in the file list the changes will ALWAYS be shown in THAT FileList.
However if files are selected in other sections or on a different Kyboma window, the changes will ONLY be reflected in the FileList if Update FileList is checked.
NB If there are two file lists, FileListA can have "Update FileList" checked whilst FileListB has "Update FileList" UNchecked. If a file which is shown on both lists is renamed using Kyboma, the new name will be shown on FileListA but the old name will still be shown on FileListB. This is true whether rename is done using FileListA or FileListB.
This Option is set checked/Unchecked automatically when file list is read according to the number of files listed. Number of files that cause the option to be set Unchecked can be changed using Options. See D. Update File List.
Associate
This option can be used:
A. To Change program associated with a filetype
B. To Change Sequence in which associations are checked
C. To remove associations, sequence or extra associations
D. To Add, Remove or Change extra programs associated with a filetype
A feature of windows is that one or several programs can be associated with each filetype. This program is used to open the file when it is double clicked in Explorer.
There are a number of problems with these associations which are avoided in Kyboma by creating separate filetype associations for Kyboma. Conversion is automatic and all associations that were defined to Windows will have been copied when you installed Kyboma.
Associate on the file menu is used to change or add Kyboma associations.
A specific sequence can also be defined for the order in which Kyboma looks for associations.
There is only one default association for each file type. This is the action done when a file of that type is double clicked.
Extra Asso(ciation)s can also be defined which are available from Action/Select From Associations.
Additionally the windows association will always be available using Select from associations from the Action menu.
If a new program is installed, it will often add or change windows associations. You can choose to add those associations to Kyboma as either extra associations or the default association. This can be done by selecting from a list of windows associations.

To Copy an association, select "List Windows associations" or "List Kyboma associations".
Associations for all file types will be listed. Any existing associations for the current file type will be shown first.
Select any existing association using up/down keys on list or using the mouse and press Enter or Copy Association button to copy all details to the current definition screen.
NB the new association will not be saved until you press OK on the first "Change association .." screen.
See List Kyboma or Windows Associations for more help on the List screen.
Associations can also be entered manually as either a Link To another application or a Special Action.
Press "Special Action" to define an item on the action menu which calls one of the allowed Kyboma functions.
First press Special Action to choose the action:
Special actions include show file in Kyboma or Move/Copy File.
Select the action required from the list.
For Move/Copy a directory must also be entered to which the file will be moved or copied when the action is selected or if it is the default action when the file is double-clicked.
Select special action "Open/Print/Explore using Windows Association" to pass each file selected to Windows API function ShellExecute. See An alternative way to open files using the windows association.
Manual Specification of a Link To another application is recommended only for advanced users.
Exe name and command line parameters should be entered separately.
Exe name can be entered without a path (e.g. notepad.exe) if the program would usually be available without the path. A warning will be displayed if the exe cannot be found in a directory specified in the path statement.
Browse can be used to select an exe name.
If Use DDE is selected, you can enter standard DDE parameters in the same format as that used by Windows using the "Specify DDE ..." button. The documentation for the application to which the association points should be consulted for info on DDE parameters for that application.
If Pass file is selected, how many files to pass is specified using the "Specify Files ..." button. Usually file names passed will be enclosed within quotes to allow spaces within file names. For some older (Windows 3.1/Dos) applications, quotes will not be allowed. To override addition of quotes, check "No Quotes ...".
Additional options specify the format of the string to be executed. They Can be entered using the "Options" button.
Exe name parameter and file names will usually be concatenated as "exe parameter files". To avoid adding either or both spaces, check the option.
By default a long file name will be passed to the application. For old windows applications, a short name will be required and Use short (8.3) names should be checked.
Finally a command line string can be entered in the same format as used by Windows including parameters %1, %2, etc. The selected file name and printer parameters will be used to substitute the %1, %2 specifications.
To process a command line string in this way, enter the string as exe name prefixed with "Substitute %1 In: ".
Description is used only for extra associations.

Create Directory
To create a new subdirectory:
1. Select the directory or drive that will contain the new subdirectory.
2. Choose Create directory from the File menu and Enter the new name.
3. New name will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
NB Directories are often described as Folders. Directory and folder are just different names for the same thing. Kyboma will always use the name Directory.
1. Select the directory or drive that will contain the new subdirectory.
(referred to here as the parent directory)
The parent directory to be used will be from the first selected item in the current section:
. directory tree - the directory selected will be used as the parent directory.
. file list - the first file or directory selected in blue and marked with * will be used to determine the parent directory. If any file is selected, the directory containing that file will be used [If directories are selected as well as files, they will be ignored even if they appear before the files] If no files are selected in blue, the first file selected in green will be used.
. the text section - directory containing the file currently displayed will be used as the parent directory.
The current section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
2. Choose Create directory from the File menu and Enter the new name.
On any disk drive there can be many directories. These are the top level directories.
The list of top level directories and files that are not in a directory is called the root directory for a drive.
E.g. C:\ is the root directory for drive C.
C:\temp1\ is the top level directory called temp1.
To Create top level directory temp1 on drive C:
a. Select drive C: in the directory tree
b. Choose Create directory from the file menu
c. Enter directory name temp1
A directory can contain many subdirectories.
The directory containing a subdirectory is called the parent directory.
The parent directory for a top level directory is the root directory for that drive.
It is shown as x:\ where x is the drive letter.
E.g. C:\temp1\pics\ is a subdirectory called pics of directory C:\temp1\
C:\temp1\ is the parent directory of subdirectory pics, C:\temp1\pics\.
C:\ is the parent directory of top-level directory temp1.
To Create subdirectory of C:\temp1\ called pics
a. Select drive C:\temp1\ in the directory tree
b. Choose Create directory from the file menu
c. Enter directory name pics
When you choose Create directory from the File Menu, the parent directory to be used will always be shown.
Enter the name of the new subdirectory.
The name entered will be checked. Certain characters are not allowed (<>*&|\?/) in a directory name. If you enter an incorrect name a message will be shown.
To create many levels of subdirectory at the same time, you can just enter the subdirectory names separated by \.
To Create subdirectory C:\temp1\pics\2000\jan\
a. Select drive C:\temp1\ in the directory tree
b. Choose Create directory from the file menu
c. Enter directory name pics\2000\jan\
d. NB This will create directory 2000 as a subdirectory of C:\temp1\pics\ AND it will the also create directory jan as a subdirectory of C:\temp1\pics\2000\
NB It does not make a difference whether you enter the final \ or not.
[Either pics\2000\jan\ OR pics\2000\jan in the last example will achieve the same result.]
3. New name will be shown in the results list on the status bar.
The Directory tree will also be expanded to show the new directory.
If the current section is directory tree then the new directory will also be selected.
| System Tools - Show Free Space |
System Tools - Show Free Space
Free Space on each drive will be listed as well as amount of space used for both Kyboma and Windows recycle directories.
Free space can be used for files to be moved or copied to any directory on the same drive.
To use the space in a recycle directory, files in the recycle directory must first be deleted.
Total available space is the sum of free space and space used in both recycle directories.
All space usage amounts are kBytes. Multiply by 1024 to determine number of bytes.
Note that space used for a file will usually be more than the total number of bytes in that file. This is because space on any disk is allocated to files as a fixed number of blocks.
Size of blocks is usually much more than 1 byte. For example if the blocksize is 16Kbytes (16384 bytes), then a file of 10 bytes will use 16kBytes on the disk and a file of 15000 bytes will also use 16kBytes on the disk. The actual blocksize varies between different disks.

System Tools - Distribution space by subdir
To show where space is used on a drive or directory with many subdirectories:
1. Select the directory or drive for which you want to see the space distribution.
2. Choose Distribution space by subdir from the file menu.
3. Check results and if you need an analysis of a subdirectory, double-click that subdirectory.
1. Select the directory or drive for which you want to see the space distribution.
The directory to be used will be from the first selected item in The Current Section:
. directory tree - the directory or drive selected will be used.
. file list - the first item selected in blue and marked with * will be used to determine the directory to be analysed. If nothing is selected in blue, the first item selected in green will be used. NB The first item selected must be a directory.
. the text section - no directory is selected. First change The Current Section and select a directory.
The Current Section is the part (directory tree, file list or text) which has a white background.
To change the section, press tab or click on the section required.
2. Choose Distribution space by subdir from the file menu.
If you have selected a drive or any directory containing many files, this can take some time.
Each Top Level directory will be shown as it is analysed in the List of results if Show List of results in Status Bar (Windows menu) is checked.
Press stop button on status bar (if shown) or Esc key to Interrupt the analysis. After user stops analysis, no results will be shown.
3. Check results and if you need an analysis of a subdirectory, double-click that subdirectory.
The List displayed shows a line for each subdirectory of the main directory selected for analysis. The total number of files and byte count of the biggest file are shown for each subdirectory.
Bytes is the sum of the byte counts of all files in the subdirectory.
Used is the total amount of space used by that subdirectory.
If you delete or move a subdirectory to a different disk, the amount of space that will become available on the drive is shown as bytes used. NB space will not become free if you delete files but keep a recycled copy.
The first directory listed is always the directory selected for analysis and the total number of files in that directory (not in any subdirectory) is shown as well as the sum of byte counts and total space used by these files.
To show the space analysis for any subdirectory. Double-click the line for the subdirectory or use up/down keys to select the subdirectory and press "Analyse ...". Press OK or Esc key to hide analysis screen. If you analysed a subdirectory, you will return to the analysis for the main directory and can select another subdirectory for analysis.
All space usage amounts are Bytes.
