HTML consists of tags and text.
Each tag consists of elements and attributes.
For example
HTML to display a link to web page http://www.kyboma.co.uk is:
<A HREF="http://www.kyboma.co.uk">Latest exiting info on Kyboma</A>
When displayed in your browser this line will be shown as:
Latest exiting info on Kyboma
There are many beginners guides to HTML and tutorials on the internet that you can read if you need a step by step or formatted tutorial. Links to some of these are listed on the Kyboma web site. Use Kyboma together with a tutorial to find further examples in pages that you have viewed previously or that or saved on your disk.
After following a tutorial, one of the best ways of learning is to look at what others have done.
Kyboma is specifically designed for this purpose, making it easy to view all elements and attributes used in a web page. Kyboma will even extract and present in an easy-to-read way the most complex of scripts and stylesheet blocks.
The HTML specification is not recommended for beginners. However if you have any sort of coding experience, it is the ultimate reference and can be downloaded from http://www.w3.org/.
For experienced users, using the HTML reference together with Kyboma Example Extractor is a very effective way to learn.
Find Examples - How To Use.
1. To Find a few html files and display examples of (any) elements.
Just press E.
2. To find examples for a specific element.
Press G, select an element, press Enter.
3. To find examples for a specific attribute.
Press G, select an element, press tab, select an attribute, press Enter.
1. To Find a few html files and display examples of (any) elements that they contain, just choose Find First Few from the Example Extractor menu or press the key defined as Find First Few [Usually E].
If more examples are required you can then use Find More Examples starting at Last Dir or press the shortcut key [Usually O] or you can use Show analysis of selected files.
An info screen will always be displayed in the top left part of the screen. Files found will be listed on the File List screen. When the first few (5 or 6) have been found, all files in the list will be analysed to create a list of elements used and displayed with details of any scripts found on the Show HTML Detail screen.
If your press Find More ..., Kyboma will continue searching until it has found 30 files the first time Find More is pressed.
The number of files requested will then be increased by 50% each time Find More is pressed until Find Few is used again.
2. To find examples for a specific element, first select an element in the list on the top of the screen. The list can be displayed by clicking the drop down button on the right or pressing the key defined as Select Element [Usually G].
An element that is not contained in the list can also be entered.
Simply press Enter to find the first few examples.
To drop the list and display many elements at once, use key Alt+Down Arrow. If the list is dropped down, press enter after moving down the list to the item required. Press Enter again to Find the first few examples or Tab to select an attribute.
3. To find examples for a specific attribute, first select the element then press tab to go to the select attribute box. When the list of attributes is dropped it will display only attributes for the selected element.
Press Enter to find files containing possible examples, analyse the HTML and extract any examples for display.
Example tags will only be listed if any are found that contain the selected attribute.
A list of attributes found is also displayed. A key is available to quickly switch between display of all tags for the selected element and only tags for the selected attribute [Usually B].
NB. The File List screen will only search for text that roughly "looks like" the selected element / attribute. The Show HTML detail screen will analyse HTML found and select examples of tags with the selected element and attribute accurately. If files are found but after analysis none are found with the required element or attribute, simply press O on the File List screen to search for more files.
For Example:
Searching for the unusual but legal attribute ONCLICK of element B will find documents with the following HTML. However analysis of the HTML will not find required examples.
<B>Connect Now</B>
<A HREF="/preferences/" ONCLICK="...
Find Examples - How It Works / What it does in more Detail.
Both Find Few and Find More will start a process consisting or 2 or 3 steps:
0. Compile a list of directories to search.
1. Search for files containing the selected element/attribute.
2. Analyse each file found and display examples.
0. Compile a list of directories to search.
Kyboma will need to do this only the first time after startup. A list of directories to be searched is made.
The list will contain directories (top level and first level subdirectories) for all fixed drives on your computer.
Kyboma Example Extractor uses the standard search feature of Kyboma FindNShow which allow you to specify any list of directories in which to search.
If a search for examples is done using Example Extractor, the search will be interrupted as soon as the requested number of files are found. There are therefore two lists of directories:
- 1. the list of directories to be searched
- 2. The directories that were searched/read before interrupting the search.
The List of directories to be searched/read can be seen using "Select Dirs & Files To List" on the "Select" menu. A shortcut is available to show this screen [Usually Ctrl+3].
The List of directories that were read before interrupting can be shown in the status bar using "Show List of Dirs Used" on the "Status Bar" submenu of the "Windows" menu. A shortcut is available to show this list [Usually Shift+Ctrl+B].
1. Search for files containing the selected element/attribute.
When Find First few is selected, the first 100 directories from the list will be seached. Saved web pages containing text that "looks like" a tag using the selected element and attribute will be listed. No check is done at this stage that the file is HTML and the contents are not analysed.
To reduce the number of files found not containing HTML, only files with extension HTM, HTML, ASP, CSS will be returned. Note that other files may contain HTML and that files called *.HTML may or may not contain valid HTML.
To search again specifying that you want to search for files with any name containing a desired element and/or attribute, press F4 and change the Named part of the criteria. NB This function is only available with Kyboma FindNShow and Example Extractor.
E.g. 1
If you select element AREA, files will be found containing text <AREA.
E.g. 2
If you select element AREA, attribute COORDS files will be found containing text <AREA with text COORDS within 200 bytes.
If the files found do not contain examples required, you can always use either Find More Examples starting at Last Dir or Find First Few Examples to search for more.
The list of files found will be displayed in a File List Window.
It will also be passed to a new Show HTML Detail window for analysis and display of examples.
In The File List Window the standard list of text and files found is displayed.
This is the same list returned using "Find File With Text" using Kyboma FindNShow.
On the Example Extractor menu you can select one of four saved screen layouts to show the list of files and text found in each file.
List Files
List HTML found
List Mix (wide)
List mix (Narrow)
The layout can also be switched between the four possible layouts using shortcut keys [Usually Ctrl+Alt+E, Ctrl+Alt+U, Ctrl+Alt+W, Ctrl+Alt+O respectively]
The current File List window will be used or if there are no files currently listed, a new file list will be created.
When a new file list window is created, the screen layout will be determined according to the Example Extractor menu item selected.
2. Analyse each file found and display examples.
Each file will be analysed. Complete lists of elements, scripts, stylesheets, comments and www addresses used in any file will be compiled.
The initial display can include any of the available sections. To change the initial display, use the Define part of the Show HTML detail screen Edit menu.
See Define - Layout.
If the initial display includes Examples of Tags sections, the list of attributes will be shown when an element is selected.
Otherwise the list of elements will be shown.
